San Diego Paramedics Named Best in the World
RCCP Team Awarded Top Honors Down Under

(Queensland, Austraila, September 29, 2007) A trio of San Diego paramedics won gold medals at an international clinical skills competition in Australia on September 28. The winning team competed on behalf of the San Diego Regional Cooperative Care Program (RCCP) and was comprised of Dannie Myers from American Medical Response (AMR), James Marugg from the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District and Cory Brown from the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Protection District.

The Australian Simulation Challenge was part of the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals’ Asia Pacific International Conference, and the RCCP paramedics beat out six other teams in the competition including second and third place winners Team Canada British Columbia and the New York Fire Department (FDNY), respectively.

The competition involved a scenario which the team had 20 minutes to manage, and the team was judged for the care it provided and the time it took to complete the tasks. The paramedics responded to an incident of unknown nature in a remote location. Upon arrival, the paramedics found the scene secure with multiple individuals on the ground in handcuffs being detained by law enforcement officers. The team had to immediately assess and treat three critical patients, two of which were computerized medical mannequins programmed with severe cardiac symptoms, and later treated a fourth patient who sustained burn injuries. To resolve the scenario, all paramedics needed to actively participate in providing patient care. The team also needed to determine that the law enforcement officers that were part of the scenario were proficient in basic first aid and enlist their assistance with patients.

All equipment, supplies and medications used in the scenario were provided to the team. The paramedics were required to operate under Australian protocols.

RCCP Gold Medal Team Trains in Australia for International Title

September 26, 2007 -- The San Diego Regional Cooperative Care Program (RCCP) team arrived in Australia on Saturday morning to prepare for the Australian Simulation Challenge, an international emergency medical services (EMS) skills competition.

Paramedics Dannie Myers from American Medical Response, James Marugg from the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District and Cory Brown from the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Protection District worked alongside the paramedics of the Queensland Ambulance Service on Monday. The ridealongs provided the team with hands-on familiarity with Australian policies, procedures and protocols, which they will be required to follow during the Simulation Challenge scheduled for Friday, September 28. The RCCP team will compete against teams from around the world to showcase their clinical abilities during the Simulation Challenge, which was designed by clinical experts and enhanced by special effects developed by Warner Brothers Studios to be both realistic and challenging.

The Australian Simulation Challenge is co-sponsored by the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals and the Journal of Emergency Medical Services. The competition is held in conjunction with an international EMS conference.

San Diego Paramedics Train for International Competition
National Champion RCCP Team Departing for Australia September 20

(San Diego, CA, September 18, 2007) The National Champion paramedic team from San Diego County is making final preparations and completing its last training before leaving for Australia on September 20 to represent the United States at an international emergency medical services competition from September 26-28.

The team is competing on behalf of the San Diego Regional Cooperative Care Program (RCCP), an innovative public-private partnership in San Diego County and is comprised of Dannie Myers from American Medical Response (AMR) San Diego, Jim Marugg from the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District and Cory Brown from the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Protection District. The paramedics advanced to the international competition by winning first place at the fourth annual national EMS Games sponsored by JEMS Magazine in Baltimore, Maryland in March.

The international competition, known as the Australian Simulation Challenge, is part of the Australian College of Ambulance Professionals’ Asia Pacific International Conference. The competition will feature clinical and patient care scenarios during which the RCCP team will be judged for the care it provides and the time it takes to complete each task.

To prepare, the team has been working with the RCCP’s Medical Director, Dr. Brad Schwartz, M.D. and participating in a variety of scenarios and practicing individual clinical skills. In the final days before their departure to Australia, the team is working with SimMan, a computerized medical training mannequin, and a representative from manufacturer Laerdal at the headquarters of the San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

The RCCP team excelled at the national EMS games when, over the course of three days, it competed against 20 other teams from across the United States with similar tasks. They shocked their competition in the preliminary round when they outperformed last year’s winner, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY). In the final competition featuring a complex scenario, Myers, Marugg and Brown impressed the judges by remaining calm, collected and profession while engaging the crowd.

The media is invited and encouraged to view the practice sessions and interview the RCCP team.
