In the case of a large disaster, AMR has the ability to triple or quadruple our fleet and personnel resources within a matter of hours.

For 30 years, AMR has served as San Diego County’s Disaster Ambulance Coordinator. We were proud to help as fires swept across the County in October 2007.

Without AMR’s mobilization of an expanded personnel pool, equipment, and fleet during the firestorms of 2003, emergency medical services in San Diego County would have been significantly hindered for four days because firefighters from all jurisdictions were focused on extinguishing the wildfires.

During Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita and in the aftermath of their destruction, AMR San Diego contributed six vehicles, two mechanics and 13 EMS employees to Louisiana and Texas to rescue, treat and transport victims in 2005. Nationally, AMR added 300 personnel from around the country to the Gulf Coast to aid in the relief efforts

AMR was awarded a federal government contract to aid in any future mass evacuations that might occur in the Gulf Coast

AMR San Diego’s certified State Ambulance Strike Team leaders educate first responders on disaster planning, disaster response and management of multiple-casualty incidents.

In August 2007, AMR participated in a comprehensive disaster drill to demonstrate our ability to respond to a catastrophic event. The surprise drill, developed by two AMR paramedics, took all aspects of our local operations into account.

AMR advocates that all healthcare and assisted living facilities have updated evacuation procedures in case of emergency, including transportation plans for critical and other immobile patients and residents.

For most of the last decade, American Medical Response has been providing medical aid at all major brush fires in San Diego County. In addition to on-scene medical care, we also provide medical supplies to all crews working the fire.

During the devastating firestorm, AMR:
Managed the deployment of over 75 additional ambulances from San Diego and other counties.

Coordinated the evacuation of 1,100 residents
and patients of 40 healthcare and residential
care facilities in San Diego County.

Assembled and distributed approximately 2,000 personal care packages to Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians and firefighters who were responding to the fires.

Received over 7,000 calls for service at our
centralized Communications Center in the first
seven days of the fires.

Increased our 911 coverage to provide medical First Responder service in local jurisdictions so that fire departments could focus efforts on fighting the blazes.
