They are usually made from toasting a combination of whole-grain oats, corn starch, sugar, salt, and certain other ingredients such as
tri-potassium phosphate and Vitamin E added for preserving freshness.
They undergo a kind of double toasting mechanism where the raw ingredients are toasted separately first and then again after when the oat flour is made into dough and shaped into O’s.
They come in various flavors that include ‘Honey nut Cheerios, one of its most popular variants, and chocolate, apple, cinnamon, fruity, frosted, etc.

Cheerios have been one of America’s most popular breakfast cereals for over 76 years now. And General Mills is its original manufacturer.
They are also known as “Big G” and owns many other leading brands in the markets such as ‘Annie’s Homegrown’, ‘Betty Crocker’, ‘Yoplai’t, ‘Colombo’, ‘Totino’s’, ‘Pillsbury’, ‘Old El Paso’, ‘Häagen-Dazs’.
It is headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota, which is a suburb of Minneapolis city in the state of Minnesota.
Cheerios began its production and sale from the year 1941 onwards under its previous name “CheeriOats”.
After facing a copyright infringement lawsuit from Quaker Oats who said their name is intentionally causing consumer confusion by using the word “oats” which they claimed was their exclusive province.
So General mills changed the name to ‘Cheerio’s’ without pursuing any legal discourse, and probably confident about its future prosperity in the market.
The FDA vs General Mills’ Cholesterol claims – In 2009, the FDA sent a warning letter to General Mills indicating a change in the way of their marketing.

They said that the labeling statements they were using for marketing their product are making claims like unapproved drugs.
General Mills replied that “Cheerios’ soluble fiber health claim has been FDA-approved for 12 years, and Cheerios’ ‘lower your cholesterol 4% in 6 weeks’ message has been featured on the box for more than two years. The science is not in question. T
he scientific body of evidence supporting the heart health claim was the basis for FDA’s approval of the heart health claim, and the clinical study supporting Cheerios’ cholesterol-lowering benefit is very strong.”
But later in 2012, the FDA sent a letter approving its labeling.
Cheerios are certainly a healthy option that can be great for breakfast as well, with some added protein of course.
The cholesterol claims seem to be working as well from the studies quoted by General Mills. So, they can be a safe snack for those with cardiovascular problems as well.
It does contain some added sugars (6g per serving) but it is a safe amount for a day. It is still processed, so it is better to limit its consumption to once or twice per day maximum.
Just a simple, milk and cheerios – combination, topped with some almonds and peanuts are sure to provide a tasty, energizing, and nourishing meal for all kinds of people.
